From her experiences with the Special Olympics to her commitment to giving back to her community, Katie’s story is a testament to how gratitude can inspire others and create lasting positive change. In this Q&A, Katie shares how gratitude shapes her athletic journey and the impact it has had on her personal life!
Q&A:
What role does gratitude play in your athletic journey, and how has it shaped the way you approach your personal life?
“Gratitude plays a crucial role in my athletic journey by fostering a positive mindset and resilience during tough times. Acknowledging support from teammates, families and friends can help remind me of the journey and people who believe in me. And when things are going well, it is a reminder of the people and things that make it all possible!”
How do you give back to the community, and what inspires you to support the causes or organizations you’re passionate about?
“Giving back to the community is important to me, and I do this through volunteering, mentorship and participating in local events (especially in my home town). I’m inspired by the impact that support and engagement can have on individuals and families, especially when I see how much effort my community puts into nurturing young athletes and students. Supporting causes like youth sports programs or education initiatives motivates me, as I believe in creating opportunities for others, just as I’ve benefited from the support in my own journey.”
Can you share a moment when giving back impacted you and those you helped?
“Working for the Special Olympics through my soccer program growing up has had a huge impact on me and the people I have helped. It helped me develop leadership skills and teamwork which helped increase my understanding of inclusivity and joy of the sport. For the campers, my involvement provided them with encouragement, support and a sense of belonging to help boost confidence and social skills. These bonds that we formed during these camps create a lasting positive impact on everyone. Overall, this experience has shaped my values and commitment to giving back, emphasizing the power of sports to unite and uplift people.”
What message do you want to share about the importance of gratitude and paying it forward?
“As an athlete, I want to emphasize that gratitude is a powerful tool for growth and connection. It is essential to appreciate the support systems you have around you (in both good and bad times!). By recognizing this, we help lift up ourselves and inspire people around us. Paying it forward creates a ripple effect that strengthens our community and spreads positivity. Ultimately, expressing gratitude and giving back reminds us that we are all part of something bigger.”
