About the Fellowship
Athletes for Hope (AFH) is seeking passionate emerging professionals to join our Athlete Mental Health Research Fellowship — a remote, part-time opportunity for graduate students, early-career clinicians, and researchers committed to advancing athlete wellbeing through research, advocacy, and education.
Fellows work at the intersection of sport and mental health, contributing to AFH Wellbeing’s mission of making mental fitness as much a part of athletic excellence as physical training. This is a rare opportunity to do meaningful, high-impact work on a national platform — backed by one of the country’s most recognized athlete-led nonprofits.
What You’ll Do
- Contribute to cutting-edge research on athlete mental health, wellbeing, and performance psychology
- Help develop evidence-based resources used by athletes, coaches, and mental health professionals nationwide
- Collaborate with AFH’s Chief Wellbeing Officer and clinical advisory network on active research initiatives
- Support the development of educational content, toolkits, and frameworks for AFH’s CHAMPS, HSLA, and Center for Wellbeing programs
- Assist with literature reviews, data analysis, and the preparation of findings for publication or public release
- Engage with AFH’s network of athletes, researchers, and partner organizations, including the APA Foundation
Who We’re Looking For
- Graduate students (Master’s or PhD) in psychology, public health, sports medicine, social work, or a related field
- Early-career clinicians or researchers with an interest in sports psychiatry or athlete wellbeing
- Strong written communication skills and comfort working independently in a remote environment
- A genuine passion for destigmatizing mental health conversations in sport
No prior experience working directly with athletes is required — what matters most is curiosity, rigor, and commitment to the mission.
What You’ll Gain
- Mentorship from leading experts in psychiatry, public health, and athlete mental health.
- Quarterly grand rounds by leading experts in sports mental health.
- A national platform to contribute to meaningful, high-impact advocacy and research.
- Publications opportunities in national peer-reviewed outlets.
- Access to AFH’s network of athletes, researchers, and mental health professionals
- Opportunities for teaching in youth mental health through our thousands of schools in CHAMPS network.
- A meaningful credential and body of work to carry into your career.
