In honor of Black History Month, Athletes for Hope is celebrating the achievements of young leaders who are making a significant impact in their communities. This year, we are excited to recognize Kaila Anthony as the winner of our 2025 Black History Essay Contest. Her moving essay pays tribute to her godmother, Dr. Kourtni Atkins-Luster, for her exceptional work in healthcare and community service.
On Monday, February 17th Baton Rouge Magnet High School junior Kaila Anthony was recognized as our 2025 Black History Essay Contest winner at Southern University’s home game. In her essay she honored her Godmother, Dr. Kourtni Atkins-Luster, for her outstanding contributions to healthcare and community service. Kaila highlighted Dr. Luster’s dedication as a Family Nurse Practitioner, entrepreneur, and mentor, emphasizing her impact on reducing healthcare disparities and serving the Baton Rouge community.
Kaila maintains a 4.0 GPA while actively engaging in school and community activities. She is a member of the Dance Club, Children’s Care Cub, which donates essential items to new mothers, and the Interact Club, where she participates in community service initiatives. She is also involved in the Baton Rouge Ballet Theater, St.Paul the Apostle Catholic Church’s Youth Ministry, and serves as the Top Teen President of the Nonpareil Chapter of Top Teens of America. Additionally, she has supported intergenerational programs with the East Baton Rouge Council on Aging Center as a youth worker.
With aspirations to work in agriculture and politics, Kaila is driven by her passion for service and leadership. She lives by her favorite quote: “With great power comes great responsibility.” Her essay not only celebrated Dr. Luster’s inspiring legacy but also reflected Kaila’s own commitment to excellence, service, and making a difference in her community.
