Founding AthletesAFH Founding Athlete Spotlight: Alonzo Mourning (May 2008)Alonzo Mourning announced two major additions to his annual Zo’s Summer Groove event. Now in its twelfth year, the weekend event has grown to a 5 day blockbuster with golf, comedy, concert, benefit dinner, a free block party, an all-star basketball game, and numerous after-party functions. For the first time, ZSG will partner with and introduce Alonzo’s Miami Heat teammate Dywane Wade and the Wade’s World Foundation. Proceeds from ZSG will benefit both organizations and for the second year in a row, Miccosukee will support the event as the title sponsor. Alonzo Mourning Charities also launched a Travel booking site to make it easier for fans to make travel and hotel arrangements and book tickets to ZSG events. Visitors will benefit from savings with ZSG hotel, flight and rental car sponsors. The Honey Shine Mentoring Program, founded by Tracy Wilson Mourning, held its 6th annual Hats Off Luncheon and Fashion Show on April 29th at Jungle Island. Twelve “Honey Bugs” dressed up in high fashion and strutted their stuff to a supporting audience of over 500 women. The event raised money for the Mentoring Program which runs bi-weekly workshops for young girls, and Camp Honey Shine, a four-week summer day camp. Alonzo Mourning Charities received a special donation in April. The 5th Grade Class at St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School raised $4500 for AMC. The students launched a community outreach project to begin the tradition of helping kids in need. They hosted a school spaghetti dinner and raffle. The kids ran the event with help from teachers and parent volunteers. A special message from Alonzo, thanking everyone involved, was shown during the dinner. Plans for Alonzo Mourning Charities other annual events are well under way. Zo’s Million Dollar Shootout will be held in Westchester New York on August 18th. The 4th Annual event will again be hosted by Shaquille O’Neal and Donald Trump. In addition, 33 Thanksgivings, which at last count had grown to 533 Thanksgivings, will be held in Miami in November. |
