Missy Foy Speaks at the JDRF Gala of HopeOn November 7th Missy Foy inspired others to "Go for the Gold" when she served as the keynote speaker at the Washington, DC Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundations 2009 Gala of Hope. Missy, who is a new member to AFH, became the first athlete with diabetes to qualify for the Olympic Marathon Trials in 2000. During her speech she talked about the struggles and obstacles she had to overcome to reach the high level of success she has achieved thus far in her running career. She was often told that it was not possible to run at an elite level with diabetes and that qualifying for the marathon trials could not be done. With the support of her coach and husband, Missy accomplished what others thought to not be possible. She went on to say that JDRF is not only an important organization for the research that they are funding, but also for the support they provide to people with the disease. Missy concluded by encouraging everyone to keep supporting the funding of research for diabetes and to keep supporting the youth affected by this disease to Go for the Gold no matter what obstacles might stand in the way. Missys story touched everyone in the room as she received a standing ovation. The night, which included a silent auction, dinner, live auction, and entertainment, proved to be a wonderful event that raised both money and awareness for juvenile diabetes. AFH looks forward to the opportunity to match Missy again!
