In addition to Miramonte High School, Luke played for the club teams Lamorinda United and Santa Clara Sporting Ruckus before taking his skills to the University of California-Berkeley. Sassano played midfield and then defense for the Golden Bears, graduating with a degree in International Economics that earned him a spot on the All-Academic All-Pac 10 team in 2007 .
