John Thompson III

BIOGRAPHY

John Thompson III was born in Washington, DC, the son of John Thompson Jr., the former Boston Celtic who coached the Georgetown Hoyas for 27 years. Growing up in Washington, DC, “JTIII” attended Gonzaga College High School before playing basketball at Princeton University, where he studied politics and graduated in 1988. He returned to Princeton as an assistant coach in 1995, before taking over for his former coach in 2000. In 2004, Thompson was hired by Georgetown to turn around the program his father had helped build. In 2007, along with his wife, Monica, he started the JTIII Foundation, which aids Washington DC community organizations.

Athletic Achievements
  • Has guided Georgetown to three consecutive NCAA tournaments and two consecutive Big East Regular Season championships
  • NABC Coach of the Year in 2007, guiding Georgetown to the Big East Championship and Final Four
  • Two-time BCA Coach of the Year
  • Coached Princeton to three Ivy League Championships in four years as Head Coach
  • Finished his Princeton career as the Tigers’ co-captain, B.F. Bunn Trophy winner and third all-time on the career assists list, with 358
  • First Team All-Met after his senior year at Gonzaga
