This past weekend 60 kids from the Boys & Girls Club were treated to a special event, as 15 members of the US Women’s Soccer team hosted a clinic for the kids. The women, who were recruited to come by teammate Heather Mitts, were extremely excited about the opportunity. Heather was joined by fellow AFH members Shannon Boxx, Meghan Schnur, Cat Whitehill, and Lauren Cheney, along with other members of the US Women’s roster for an afternoon at the Club.

The afternoon was packed with activity for the kids. The bulk of the afternoon consisted of a mini soccer clinic where the kids rotated around to different stations focused on soccer skills, games, and drills. The stations gave every child an opportunity to interact with the players. After the stations, the women hosted a meet and greet and autograph session. The kids were thrilled to have so many talented and inspirational women come out to host a clinic where they could learn more about the game of soccer. It was a wonderful opportunity for Heather and her teammates to pass on their passion for the game!

The event was one of 35 from across the country where athletes volunteered on MLK, topping off a three-part social media campaign. Heather had spent the last month rallying around her network to raise money for the Hollywood Boys & Girls Club as she competed in the online fudraising phase of the campaign, racing against other athletes to raise the most money for their cause. Over the course of the competition, which ended on January 15th, Heather raised nearly $4,000 for the organization. The event at the Hollywood Boys and Girls Club marked the end of the race for Heather, while giving her an opportunity to engage first hand the kids the fundraising impacted.

Initiated by Congress in 1994, the King Day of Service transforms the federal holiday into a national day of community service grounded in Dr. King’s teachings of nonviolence and social justice. The Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that oversees the nation’s domestic service initiatives, led the annual Martin Luther King Day of Service in partnership with the King Center and nonprofits, community groups, schools, and businesses across the country.
