October 21, 2008 - Athletes for Hope and Genwoth Financial Complete Three-part Genworth Sports Charity SeriesAthletes for Hope and corporate partner Genworth Financial put together a three-part Genworth Sports Charity Series in Boston, Philadelphia and New York in the Fall of 2008. Athletes for Hope helped to coordinate athlete’s involvement and a partnership with NeighborWorks America affiliates in each city. In Boston, Genworth Financial Advisors spent the day with Brian Scalabrine of the Boston Celtics and the Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation cleaning and revitalizing the Spencer-Whitfield Park on August 1st. Volunteers picked up trash, mowed the grass and put up a new sign and created a stone border for the reworked flower bed. On August 27th in Philadelphia, Advisors joined Chris Therien of the Philadelphia Flyers, New Kensington Community Development Corporation, Franklin’s Paine and Friend’s of Pop’s to prepare the community space known as Pop’s Playground for a skate park and dog park area. They also restored a youth art project, put in a new fence and refreshed the painting. On October 21st in New York City, volunteers joined NFL players Gerris Wilkinson, Abram Elam and Jack Brewer, Harlem Congregations for Community Improvement, and the City of New York Parks and Recreation Department. They cleaned up trash and debris and planted new flowers in the garden area. Additionally, the NFL players spoke to more than 50 youth from the after-school and flag football program. |
