August 1, 2008 - Brian Scalabrine of the Boston Celtics Joins Volunteers from Genworth Financial and the Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation to revitalize the Spencer-Whitfield Park in Dorchester, MAOn Friday, Advisors from AFH Corporate Partner Genworth Financial took the day off from work to get involved in a special community revitalization project in Dorchester. They teamed up with the Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation, an affiliate of NeighborWorks America, and Brian Scalabrine of the Boston Celtics to clean up and refresh the Spencer-Whitfield Park. Local youth from the Park Patrol Youth Project, joined in as well. The day started off with a barbeque at Codman Square NDC headquarters, where Marcos and Gail from CSNDC gave some background on the development of the park thus far. The area is owned by the city and NDC has been working to maintain the site and secure funding for more enhancements. Plans for the park include a playground area, sandbox, games and picnic tables. After lunch, the volunteers headed down to the site for some clean-up and landscaping work. Despite the hot sun, they bagged and gathered more than 20 bags of trash, mowed and weeded the entire park area, painted and put up a new playground sign and redid a flower bed with a fantastic stone border. Brian Scalabrine joined everyone at the park site and immediately upon arrival, took charge of landscaping duties for the flower bed. The kids searched the park and helped dig out large rocks, while Brian took care of all the heavy lifting. Afterwards, Brian took pictures and signed autographs for all the volunteers as well as some local community members who stopped by to thank him for his support of the project.
