Annika Sorenstam is the greatest female golfer of our generation, and often regarded as the best of all-time. Throughout her storied career, she has rewritten the record books, brought unprecedented attention to women’s golf, and subsequently impacted all of women’s sports for the better. Upon her retirement, Annika shifted her attention and energy to philanthropy. In Annika’s own words: “My goal is to take my passion and my drive and my dedication from the golf course and move it towards making a difference.”
To begin her philanthropic journey, Annika visited with Athletes for Hope founder Andre Agassi and his charter school in Las Vegas as a means to incorporate his successes and learn from his errors in regard to her own charitable involvement. The opportunity to learn from a fellow sports philanthropist was crucial. In 2007, she founded the Annika Foundation – a Florida based foundation that teaches children the importance of healthy living, active lifestyle through fitness and nutrition. And, of course, her foundation assists junior golfers with opportunities to pursue their dreams.
Now, the Annika Foundation is an established philanthropic entity and continues to grow and thrive. At the same time Annika maintains a strong connection to Athletes for Hope. In fact, her dedication and commitment to Athletes for Hope is at the same level as our founding athletes. For example, Annika participated in a panel discussion at the Milken Institute Global Conference that was hosted by Athletes for Hope and included a handful of our founders. There, Annika informed the group about the good work of her foundation and shared her unique approach to philanthropy: “Whatever you put in, you become.”
