Erin, who has volunteered with Doorways for Women on several occasions, was excited to give back to her community on this day of service. Early in the evening, Erin assisted with the “thank you card” table that was set up for the families who participated in the holiday “adopt a family”. The families took the time to write thank you notes to the individuals and organizations that sponsored them. After that, Erin headed to the children’s room where she spent time playing and interacting with the children. Initiated by Congress in 1994, the King Day of Service transforms the federal holiday into a national day of community service grounded in Dr. King’s teachings of nonviolence and social justice. The Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that oversees the nation’s domestic service initiatives, led the annual Martin Luther King Day of Service in partnership with the King Center and nonprofits, community groups, schools, and businesses across the country.
