Emily Janss Participates in Playtime with Washington, DC Kids on MLKProfessional soccer player, Emily Janss, spent the past month rallying her network to donate to the Children’s Homeless Playtime Project as she competed in the Who Gives: Racing for a Cause campaign. Over the course of the competition, which ended on January 15th, Emily raised nearly $1,500 for the organization. To top off the campaign, Emily participated in the Martin Luther King Day of Service on January 18th, where she headed to a Homeless Children’s Playtime Project site to volunteer her time and meet the kids. During the visit, Emily served as a special guest for Playtime where she lead soccer games with the children and taught them new ball handling skills. The kids absolutely loved having Emily there, as her enthusiasm for the game made the kids eager to play. It was wonderful to see the children listen so earnestly, concentrate so much, and improve their game over the course of the evening. Emily, who was one of 35 athletes from across the country to volunteer on MLK, had a wonderful time meeting the children and interacting with them during playtime. She looks forward to another visit in the future! Initiated by Congress in 1994, the King Day of Service transforms the federal holiday into a national day of community service grounded in Dr. King’s teachings of nonviolence and social justice. The Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that oversees the nation’s domestic service initiatives, led the annual Martin Luther King Day of Service in partnership with the King Center and nonprofits, community groups, schools, and businesses across the country.
