On Thursday, April 22nd, 2010, the Baltimore Ravens teamed up with Parks and People, a non-profit organization that supports educational, recreational and environmental programs in order to unite the citizens and open spaces of Baltimore, for a local environmental restoration and tree planting project on the Gwynns Falls Trail. The Gwynns Falls Trail is a continuous recreation corridor that connects over 30 neighborhoods in West and Southwest Baltimore. Local residents and visitors are able to bike, hike, rollerblade, fish, picnic, watch for birds and other wildlife, undertake environmental education activities, enjoy nature, host community festivals and meet friends and neighborhood residents along this coveted neighborhood Trail. The project, which consisted of tree planting, landscaping, trash removal and invasive species removal, required the help of almost 100 volunteers, including Raven's Tackle, Joe Reitz, and other players and members from the Ravens organization, the Parks and People staff, as well as employees of Athletes for Hope and M&T Bank. Accomplishments included the installation of a new 200 square foot native perennial garden, the planting of 16 new native Eastern Redbud trees, mulching and other maintenance for dozens of young trees, and the removal of several truckloads worth of trash and invasive plants. All the volunteers had a great time getting their hands dirty and doing their part to make an impact on Earth Day. In addition, Baltimore City Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake was in attendance to take pictures and encourage volunteers to continue their good work. |
