Cal Ripken, Jr.BIOGRAPHYIn 2001, Cal Ripken Jr. and his family established the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation. The Foundation helps teach life lessons through baseball to disadvantaged youth. The Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation has refurbished fields throughout Maryland, donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Boys & Girls Clubs across the country, and helped thousands of underprivileged kids enjoy baseball experiences. The foundation has also teamed up with NikeGo, the non-profit arm of Nike, to donate over $1 million of baseball and softball equipment to school systems across the country. The Foundation's most recent endeavor is the construction Cal Sr.'s Yard. When completed, this facility will be a miniature replica of Oriole Park at Camden Yards, complete with stadium seating, a tournament quality playing field, a press box, lighting, in-ground dugouts, bullpens, major league scoreboard and other amenities. Cal Sr.'s Yard will host countless youth groups, with the emphasis on serving young people from disadvantaged circumstances. A 19-time MLB All-Star, Cal is considered one of the best shortstops to ever play the game. Cal earned the nickname "Iron Man" by playing in a record 2,632 consecutive major league baseball games from May 30, 1982 to September 19, 1998. Cal played his entire major league career with the Baltimore Orioles, amassing more than 3,000 hits and 400 home runs. He is the only AL player in MLB history with multiple All Star Game MVP Awards (1991 and 2001). Ripken's #8 was retired by the Baltimore Orioles in a ceremony before the final home game of the 2001 season. Cal Ripken Jr. Facebook Page |
