June 29, 2007 - NBA Legend Buck Williams Helps out Hope and a Home
On Friday, June 29th, retired NBA legend Buck Williams visited Hope and a Home’s annual Summer Camp near Poolesville, MD to meet with the kids, share his life experiences and inspire them to make good decisions in their own lives.

The week-long camp which hosts children from Hope and a Home’s transitional housing program, gives DC area at-risk youth the opportunity to participate in activities such as horseback riding, golf, swimming, and basketball while learning valuable life lessons.

On Friday afternoon, Williams spent a few hours talking to the kids about the importance of making good decisions in life, surrounding themselves with the right people as well as setting and achieving goals for themselves. The kids listened to Williams’ experiences and insight, then followed-up with questions about both his life and career. After speaking to the kids, Williams joined them to hit golf balls and enjoy the summer afternoon.

Buck Williams is a part of the Athletes for Hope network of athletes who are working to create positive change in the world. Athletes for Hope’s mission is to assist professional athletes in their desire to give back to the community through education, matching and recognition programs.

This is the camp’s fifth year and is part of Hope and a Home’s mission to create affordable housing and lasting change for DC families and neighborhoods. For more than 25 years, Hope and a Home has assisted DC youth and brought neighbors together to created vibrant, connected communities.

Williams attended the University of Maryland where he is now a member of the Athletic Hall of Fame. He was selected third overall in the first round of the 1981 NBA draft by the New Jersey Nets and was the 1982 NBA Rookie of the Year. His career spanned 17 years, included 3 All-Star appearances, an All-NBA Second Team selection and four First and Second All-Defensive Team selections. He amassed nearly 17000 career points and over 13000 career rebounds. In 1999, his #52 jersey was retired by the New Jersey Nets.
