Brittany Hochevar Hikes with High School Eco Clubs to Work Together for a Greener FutureOn Saturday, AVP Player Brittany Hochevar took a break from the courts and joined 75 students from rival Los Angeles High Schools as they hiked together at the scenic Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area. The students, from Dorsey and Crenshaw high school, were brought together by their ecology clubs. The two clubs are dedicated to expanding student’s knowledge of, respect for, and involvement with the natural environment. The hike, which began at Crenshaw high school, was not only a chance for the students to socialize with their counterparts, but also an educational lesson about diverse geography, nature, and environmental rehabilitation. During the club excursion, the students came away with a vital message that nature can thrive even in the heart of the city as long as people make a conscious effort to work towards a “greener future”. Brittany took part in all of the festivities of the hike. She spent time interacting with the students on the trail, enjoyed lunch with them, and shared her passion for the environment. Not only did she enjoy the hike and the opportunity to engage with the students, but she loved that the two clubs were able to put their rivalry aside for a good cause. She looks forward to hiking with them again in the future as more outings are planned! Brittany was one of 35 AFH members from across the country who volunteered their services on MLK. Initiated by Congress in 1994, the King Day of Service transforms the federal holiday into a national day of community service grounded in Dr. King’s teachings of nonviolence and social justice. The Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that oversees the nation’s domestic service initiatives, led the annual Martin Luther King Day of Service in partnership with the King Center and nonprofits, community groups, schools, and businesses across the country.
