For the second year in a row, Athletes for Hope challenged our athlete members to rally around the Administration’s 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance in an effort to unite and mobilize around important causes. The response we received was overwhelming. Close to 100 athletes, representing over 12 different sports participated in the weeks leading and subsequent to September 11th. The opportunities spanned across the country and served various communities in a number of ways. Activities included hosting clinics for underprivileged children, visiting hospitals, and participating in community development projects. Some athletes were working on developing a relationship with charities AFH had previously matched them to, while others were first time connections with the intent of a longer- term commitment. Events were scheduled in 24 cities nationwide, some even taking place while players were on the road for competition, like Cincinnati Reds’ center fielder, Drew Stubbs who took time from his game-day routine in Denver to visit the patients at The Children’s Hospital (Aurora, CO). With over 43 from this rally alone, AFH is closing in on 600 connections in just over three years. We congratulate all of those athletes who continue to inspire, empower and commit in order to make a positive impact within their communities. |
